Practical non-clinical skills for surgeons was introduced as a new section to the journal in 2013 to provide a forum for papers related to those skills so important to surgeons but that are not included in their formal training and often only acquired by hard experience. These skills include those related to academic and non-academic endeavours: examples already published include clinical photography and writing and revising a paper. The term Practical nonclinical skills for surgeons however has proved cumbersome. Although the topic is in keeping with Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS), that course administered through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is an educational programme developed by the University of Aberdeen and therefore not appropriate for the name of a section of the journal. To resolve these concerns, it was agreed at the 2017 Editorial Board meeting that this section be renamed Professional Skills for Surgeons. References
