Introduction Surgical education is developing as its own discipline, characterized in part by the unique nature of the work and its settings. Teaching and learning occur as part of surgical practice and in a diverse range of formal and informal educational activities. Learners include anyone involved in surgical practice from medical students, junior doctors, surgical trainees, specialist international medical graduates, consultant surgeons and other health professionals. The Graduate Programs in Surgical Education (GPSE) aim to support surgeons in developing educational expertise to optimally facilitate best-evidence surgical education and training in these settings. However, with these diverse learners there is a specific focus on specialist surgeon training. In 2022, the GPSE celebrate 10 years of student enrolments. The GPSE were the initiative of John Collins when he was Dean of Education, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and Chris Christophi when he was Head, Department of Surgery (Austin), University of Melbourne with support from Geoff McColl when he was Dean, Melbourne Medical School. The co-badged degrees were developed in response to a survey which functioned as a needs assessment. The GPSE sought to address the desire of surgeons to extend their educational expertise to more advanced educational programmes leading to academic qualifications’. This article describes the GPSE and some of its achievements in the first decade. The achievements are partly illustrated by the publication of a series of extended abstracts of students’ work on the Master of Surgical Education degree.
