Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients experience disparities in surgical access and outcomes. Several factors impact the provision of surgical care to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people including cultural factors, social determinants of health (social, political and economic factors), historical experiences (loss of land and culture, transgenerational trauma, grief and loss), racism and social exclusion. Suboptimal surgical cultural competency and cultural safety may be a contributing factor to these disparities.
