Due to its fundamental role in balancing neuronal activity in the brain, GABAergic signaling is the target of a broad spectrum of regulations. Still, how the metabolic hormone insulin affects GABAergic signaling in the hippocampus is incompletely understood. In the current issue of Acta Physiologica Hammoud and colleagues1 , led by Professor Birnir, report a profound and pivotal analysis of the multifaceted roles played by insulin in the regulations of GABAergic signaling at different ages and in the tg-APPSwe mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Here, selected results from the paper are addressed. How is the regulation by insulin of GABAergic transmission mediated? Which elements and states of the hippocampus are affected? How are the disease-related mechanisms manifested and modulated? Do the results have any relevance for other states of hippocampal changes?
