Recently, an article entitled "Modelling mood disorders: an ACE solution?" proposes a model based on three domains: activity, cognition and emotions to define mood episodes (1). The authors provide a remarkable history of clinical descriptions of mood disorders from the pre-treatment period (especially from the 19th century, which saw the emergence of the foundations of the modern definitions of psychiatry) to our current systems of classification. Modern psychiatry has focused on reliability and gradually moved away from the richness of the first descriptions, selecting only the most reliable criteria for research purpose.
