I read the editorial from Malhi and Bell entitled "Detecting classic bipolar disorder: A classic mistake?" with interest. I agree and appreciate that you brought many important claims to our attention. However, in the second section, "An alternative explanation: You cannot see what is not there, especially if you do not want to", when you assert that the symptoms do not need to develop as an episode, it implies the occurrence of subsyndromal symptoms for months or years. This is what Kraepelin and Kahlbaum defined as affective temperament, named as dysthymia, cyclothymia, and hyperthymia.
