Obesity is linked to both hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which intermittent obstruction of pharyngeal airways results in hypoxia during sleep. Shared immunologic mechanisms may portend risk of OSA among HS patients. Similar to HS, the proinflammatory state in sleep apnea is characterized by activation of nuclear factor-κB and interleukin-17 signaling, along with increased concentrations of downstream inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6. Furthermore, sleep disturbance was identified as a critical item to be measured within a core domain set for interventional trials. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
