There has been a rise in popularity of natural hair, a movement normalizing afro-textured hair in its natural state, without chemical or heat alteration. It is thought that genetic predisposition and environmental insults such as chemical relaxation, tight hairstyles, and heat may lead to the inflammation that contributes to the phenotype of scarring alopecia highlighting the importance of teaching patients how to care for their hair without these practices.
