modification that silences gene transcription and is involved in stem cell differentiation and carcinogenesis. H3K27me3 expression was reduced in 83.3% (25 of 30) of patients with MCPyV-positive MCCs. By contrast, Matsushita et al. showed that H3K27me3 was decreased in MCPyV-negative MCC, especially MCC combined with squamous cell carcinoma. Given these results, the role of H3K27me3 expression in MCC is still controversial. In the present study, LINE-1 expression was only seen in MCPyV-positive MCC, suggesting that epigenetic dysregulation may be associated with MCPyV expression. Although the number of patients was limited in this study, global DNA hypomethylation in MCPyV-positive MCC may be a causative factor of tumorigenesis.
