©2018 by Quintessence Publishing Co Inc. Available data indicate that following tooth loss, alveolar buccal bone is more prone to resorption than lingual bone.1 This bony level discrepancy requires attention during implant placement to preclude bony correction procedures. This has led to the introduction of implants with an altered neck design to address resultant morphologic differences. However, the associated biomechanical behavior of these implants is unreported. In this preliminary study, the effects of implant neck alteration on the stress distribution of virtually placed implants, abutments, and peri-implant bone were evaluated using finite element analysis (FEA) methods.
