Parotid gland tumours are usually investigated with fine needle aspiration cytology, although the reported sensitivity for detecting malignancy is variable Pre-operative imaging is used to aid staging, delineate anatomy for surgery and to look for malignant characteristics Suspicion of malignancy on fine needle aspiration cytology and radiological imaging can help with planning the extent of surgical excision Our results show a high sensitivity and specificity for fine needle aspiration cytology, and high sensitivity for pre-operative imaging The sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration cytology is improved when combined with results of pre-operative radiological imaging This article is protected by copyright.
