In 1978, Turnbull published how a retro-ileal transmesenteric colorectal anastomosis can lengthen the ascending colon. In fact, this manoeuvre is also useful in the event of a marginal artery injury during splenic flexure mobilization. Since 2010, transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) has facilitated the dissection of low rectal tumours in patients with obesity or in males with narrow pelvises.
