Conventional laparoscopic colorectal surgery requires three to four port site stab incisions with an additional mini-laparotomy for specimen extraction; the cumulative size of abdominal breach may negate some of the advantages of the laparoscopic approach.. Natural orifice (anorectal) specimen extraction (NOSE) is an alternative. Established advantages of NOSE include improved pain profiles, length of stay1 and improved cosmesis.
