Conventional laparoscopic colorectal surgery requires three to four port site stab incisions with an additional mini-laparotomy for specimen extraction; the cumulative size of abdominal breach may negate some of the advantages of the laparoscopic approach.. Natural orifice (anorectal) specimen extraction (NOSE) is an alternative. Established advantages of NOSE include improved pain profiles, length of stay1 and improved cosmesis. Elimination of an extraction site leads to reduced risk of incisional herniation, and wound complications. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
