Anal fistula is a common chronic perianal disease. The vast majority of anal fistulae are secondary to infection of the anal glands. Anal fistulae are classified according to their anatomic relation to the anal sphincter. The internal opening lies at the dentate line: submucosal - runs under the anoderm or the rectal mucosa; intersphincteric - crosses the internal sphincter and reaches the skin; transsphincteric - crosses both sphincters; and suprasphincteric extend above the entire sphincter complex.
