A rectocele is a herniation of the anterior wall of the rectum through the posterior vaginal wall. In most cases these are small and asymptomatic requiring no further treatment, but in some women this condition may result in obstructed defaecation. Patients complain of difficulties with rectal-emptying, straining during defaecation, and the need for vaginal digitation.
