To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe the association between direct measures of abdominal adiposity and adiponectin in pregnancy. First-trimester ultrasound measurement of maternal abdominal adiposity may provide an accessible, safe and cost-effective approach to identify women with sub-clinical hypoadiponectinaemia in midpregnancy, several weeks before the conventional screening time for gestational diabetes.
