Depressive symptoms are common among adolescents with type 1 diabetes, with nearly one-quarter demonstrating features of depressed mood [1]. The American Diabetes Association recommends routine depression screening for adolescents with diabetes [2], although they make no recommendations regarding the measure used or how to assimilate the process into clinical care [3]. The Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) is a brief depression screening tool, previously validated in paediatric populations [4,5]. In an effort to implement universal depression screening, we assessed the feasibility of administering the PHQ-2 within the context of routine type 1 diabetes care, which has yet to be examined in a large, complex paediatric practice.
