Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial epithelial and stromal tissue is present outside of the uterus. It involves ovaries, fallopian tubes, tissue lining the pelvis and even beyond pelvic organs. While the exact cause of endometriosis remains unknown, many theories have been presented including retrograde menstruation (implantation) and stem cell theories.1 Endometriosis includes three subtypes: superficial peritoneal endometriosis, ovarian endometriosis and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE),2 although there is a lot of overlap between these 3 categories and they are not well defined.
