After decades of near total neglect on the global health stage, diagnostics are beginning to get the attention needed to enable them to play their central role in improving the health of millions of persons around the world. The catalysts for this new attention are complex and intertwined. Perhaps the greatest is the emphasis by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organizations on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the recognition that achievement of UHC without access to good quality diagnostics will be impossible.
