Every year since 1929, the entertainment industry prepares for the Academy Awards (“The Oscars”). This event recognizes achievements in film from the previous year. Filmmakers commonly use the appearance of cutaneous disease to further the narrative. If conveyed accurately, skin disease depicted in cinema can lead to increased awareness and provide insight. However, inaccurate presentations of skin disease can perpetuate common misconceptions and promote discrimination. A previous study of the American Film Institute’s list of heroes and villains showed skin conditions significantly associated with evil characters. The listed villains with skin findings appeared in “genre” films such as science fiction, horror, and fantasy movies. The current study analyzes Best Picture award winners for dermatologic content.
