Characteristics of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa and concomitant inflammatory bowel disease Dear Editor, A recent study found an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) compared to controls. However, the current knowledge regarding the clinical characteristics of patients with HS and concomitant IBD is still sparse. We explored the characteristics and predictors of IBD in HS patients attending a dermatological department. Demographic data was noted, and biomarkers in blood were analyzed. Comorbidities and severity of HS, measured by Hurley stage and hidradenitis suppurativa score (HSS), was obtained through interview and clinical examination. A total of 625 patients age ≥18 years were included. At enrollment, the median age was 39 years (interquartile range (IQR) 28–51.2), and 63.7% were female (Table 1). The overall prevalence of IBD was 8.5%, of which 6.2% and 2.2%, respectively, had Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Patients with concomitant IBD had a median disease duration of 9.2 (IQR 3.2–22.5) and 10.2 years (IQR 4–23.5) for HS and IBD, respectively. Of the 53 patients with concomitant IBD, 27 patients were initially diagnosed with HS, with a median 2 years (IQR 0–13) between HS and IBD diagnosis. A total of 26
