The gut is a common site for helminth infections. Immunity to helminths relies on a strong type 2 response that is characterized by cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4, 5 and 13. Intestinal type 2 immunity culminates in a “weep and sweep” response governed by ample mucus production (weep) and an increase in smooth muscle contraction (sweep), which act together to expel helminths. Although some of the characteristics of a type 2 response have been clear for a while, there are still large knowledge gaps in exactly how it is mounted. In a recent study by Varyani et al ., it was found that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), a cytokine-like factor 1966, essential for the induction of a strong intestinal type 2 immune response 1
