The European smelt, Osmerus eperlanus, is an anadromous species with a historic distribution in the coastal and estuarine Atlantic waters of western Europe ranging from the Garonne estuary in the south to the Baltic, Barents and White Seas in the north, including relict landlocked non-migratory, lacustrine populations occurring in Scandinavia, Baltic and White Sea/Barents Sea regions (Froese & Pauly, 2019).
