While radiographic imaging offers assessment of nodal and metastatic status as part of initial staging of cutaneous melanoma (CM), imaging also reveals non-melanoma ("incidental") findings, whose rate and significance are not well established. We sought to examine the rates, significance, and influencing factors of incidental radiographic findings of 115 patients, stages IIB-IIIC CM, with initial staging radiographic imaging at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) between January 2000 and December 2013. The imaging modalities evaluated in our study included most commonly, a combination of PET and CT, but in some cases, and/or a Chest X Ray, MRI of brain, or plain CT.
