I am honored to have been selected as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System, and to follow the three editors who have preceded me: Mario Fiori, the founder, Robert Meyers, and David Cornblath. Under their leadership, JPNS has gained a solid international stature and become the journal of choice in the field of peripheral nerve disorders. I want to thank the Wiley staff for making this transition as smooth as possible, and Dr. Cornblath for his mentorship and advice on how to continue the growth of the journal. JPNS is the official organ of the Peripheral Nerve Society, a highly renowned scientific society that has achieved recognition at a global level by supporting the development of high quality basic and clinical research, by fostering strong relationships with national Peripheral Nerve Societies worldwide and, most of all, by educating young neurologists and neuroscientists. JPNS is one of the most important tools we use to reach our community and beyond. The journal contributes to the scientific discourse with high quality publications which deepen our knowledge on mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of peripheral nerve disorders. JPNS also publishes guidelines, recommendation papers, and clinical trial results, which are expected to improve disease management and quality of life for our patients. Starting in 2020, JPNS will revise its structure. Original research papers will be clustered into four new sections: Mechanisms of Disease, Genetics, Clinical Research, and Clinical Trials. This new structure will provide researchers in subspecialty areas better ability to identify the subject of their article and increase visibility. I wish to thank Profs. Peles, Rossor, Sommer, and Cornblath for joining as Associate Editors in these areas. Review articles will enrich JPNS issues, providing expert updates on hot topics in any field of peripheral nervous system disorders, from basic to clinical neuroscience. Special issues covering macro-topics and developed with a translational perspective, from mechanism of disease to diagnosis and treatment, are expected to be published yearly. Case reports of uppermost clinical and educational interest, as well as letters to the editor emphasizing subjects focusing the scientific debate on relevant issues, will also be considered for publication. New exciting and unique opportunities will allow the authors of accepted articles to more widely disseminate their scientific results. Video Abstracts will be available to describe the main results of the work, and to what extend it can deepen our knowledge and translate into better clinical practice and research. Graphical abstracts, visual representation of the research summarizing the most relevant finding of the work, or a combination of findings, will be welcomed. In the current media landscape, where most information uptake happens in quick and small bites, the scientific community must assume the responsibility for such transferal. These tools, besides being proven to significantly increase readership, are well suited for this. JPNS refers to a scientific niche, whose impact on medicine is huge. The epidemiology of peripheral neuropathies, the role of systemic disease, and the new diagnostic opportunities provided by immunology and genetics from which innovative treatments are envisaged, open exciting scenarios for the future. My main commitment as editor will be to make JPNS the window through which our scientific community communicates with the entire community of neuroscientists. From this perspective, I do hope many of you will continue to consider JPNS the best investment our society, and most of all our younger researchers, deserve. It is a privilege for me to contribute to this commitment. Thank you.
