Previous studies have revealed a close connection between acne and insulin resistance (IR). However, studies on the prevalence and characteristics of female acne patients with IR were limited. In the present study, A total of 524 female acne patients and 50 healthy controls were consecutively recruited. Detailed examinations were conducted on all the subjects. The clinical severity of acne was determined by the Global Acne Grading System. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values was calculated as: fasting glucose (mmol/L)×fasting insulin (mIU/L)/22.5. A HOMA-IR value greater than 2.5 was predefined as IR.
