Tuberculosis is amycobacterial infection that is one of the major causes of death globally, with the emergence of multidrug resistance during the last decadebeing amajor challenge tohumanhealth. TB is an airborne infection that spreads via inhalation of droplets containingM. tuberculosis (Mtb) bacteria that are released from coughing TB-infected individuals. TB is a multifactorial disease as only one of ten infected individuals develops active disease, with many contributing risk factors such as malnutrition, poor living conditions and other infections such as HIV. Treatment requires six months on two to four antibiotics, and there is no effective vaccine that could assist in eliminating the disease. The reviews on TB in this issue cover the areas of biomarkers, vaccine development, host immune responses, host-directed therapies and the treatment of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).
