AAAs are amongst the most challenging cardiovascular conditions: they are generally asymptomatic, slow progression represents the natural history and rupture is potentially life-threatening with an estimated mortality rate of 80% in patients reaching hospital and 50% in those undergoing urgent surgery [1]. Accordingly, the detection of AAAs before rupture and elective repair represent the mainstay of management, and community-based ultrasound screening programmes have been shown to significantly reduce mortality from AAAs in men aged 65-79 years [1].
