4 years from 2010 to 2014 and vaccination status was available in 291. They determined the dead children’s vaccination status and whether or not they had underlying condition from their case records. They found that only 31% (47 of 153) of children with underlying high-risk medical conditions was vaccinated against influenza. Using logistic regression to derive odds ratios, vaccine effectiveness (VE = 1 – odds ratio) against death in all children was 65% (95% confidence interval 47–78%) and against death in high-risk children was 51% (95% confidence interval 31–67%). A major weakness of the study is their need to estimate influenza vaccination coverage of controls from data in the national survey or a national insurance claims database. Despite this weakness, these data confirm our obligation to make sure we offer annual influenza immunisation to all high-risk children.
