There were 333 009 adolescents admitted with adversity-related injury (54 6% girls) and 649 818 admitted with accident-related injury (74.4% boys), of whom 4782 (0.5%) died in the next 10 years (74.4% boys). Adolescents with adversity-related injury had higher risks of suicide (adjusted subhazard ratio 4.54 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.25–6.36) for girls, and 3.15 (95% CI 2.73–3.63) for boys) and of drug-related or alcohol-related death (4.71 (95% CI 3.28–6.76) for girls, and 3.53 (95% CI 3.04–4.09) for boys) than with accident-related injury. The take-home message is that adolescents with adversity-related injury are at highrisk of dying violently or at their own hand and we need adequate psychiatric services to intervene and try to help them.
