Testing for Herpes simplex virus was negative. Similarly, tests for other infectious triggers, such as Cytomegalovirus, Epstein–Barr virus and human immunodeficiency virus, were also negative. She was diagnosed with erythema multiforme major. Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM was positive, and a fourfold rise in IgG titer was seen 2 weeks later. She was treated with clarithromycin for 14 days. Her mucositis and rash regressed without immunomodulatory therapy (steroids or intravenous immunoglobulin).
