Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe persons' who have a co-occuring mental health and substance misuse disorders (Staiger, Long, McCabe and Ricciardelli 2008). It was first identified in the 1980s and is the cause of significant economic burden to health care, justice and educational systems internationally (Hryb, Kirkhart & Talbert 2007; Otasowie 2020). It is well reported that, to date dual diagnosis is under-diagnosed and poorly treated within the confines of mental health services (Fantuzzi and Mezzina 2020).
