Deeper study into the theoretical basis through which these competencies facilitate learning would be invaluable, but even this would not be enough as we need to identify concrete strategies for optimising supervision-specific expertise, perhaps by examining those employed by expert supervisors. The insights gained through such research will help achieve a clearer understanding of the competence of supervision as a complex ability by providing a framework from which supervisors can be taught to decontextualise and recontextualise every new experience. The capacity of the supervisor to achieve these competencies and optimise learning . . . should be the primary foundation that sets the basis on which ratios for supervision can be considered
