On her clerkship rotation in medicine, Shawn is ‘rounding’ with the team. At each bedside, a learner gives the assembled team an update on the patient’s condition, results of investigations and evolving management plans. The supervising preceptor asks a few questions and makes the occasional suggestion. Finally, it is Shawn’s turn. She picks up her patient’s chart and, following the format she has observed, presents Ms McKenna’s case. The preceptor pulls out her stethoscope, listens to the patient’s heart sounds and asks a few questions about cardiac arrhythmia. The supervising resident nods as Shawn answers, pleased that they reviewed this in a bedside teaching session just yesterday. As the team moves on to the next bed, Shawn makes a few notes on the chart. Ms McKenna asks what she is writing, and Shawn briefly explains ‘cardiac arrhythmia’ before running to catch up with the team.
