Maxillofacial bone defects can occur after removal of a tumor. In addition, osteomyelitis can cause large segmental defects in the jaw. Reconstructive surgical procedures have been developed in parallel with the development of cancer treatments, and these require radical excision of the tumor. Starting in 1970, various vascularized flaps were developed to fill the large tissue defect after surgical removal of relatively advanced cancer in the maxillofacial region.
