A novel B allele was characterized by a nucleotide deletion (c.3_4 del G) in exon 1 of the ABO gene identified in a Chinese individual with B subtype. ABO blood group antigens play an important role in the fields of both transfusion and transplantation medicine. Human red blood cells (RBCs) show various phenotypes due to the serological characteristic differences caused by the genetic variation. With the improvement of genotypic methods, many variant alleles have been identified. In this report, we present a novel B allele characterized by a nucleotide deletion (c.3_4 del G) in exon 1 of the ABO gene identified in a Chinese individual with B subtype.
