During storage, red blood cells (RBCs) undergo significant biochemical and morphologic changes, referred to collectively as the “storage lesion”. It was hypothesized that these defects may arise from disrupted oxygen‐based regulation of RBC energy metabolism, with resultant depowering of intrinsic antioxidant systems.
