Identifying ABO blood group correctly is of great significance to ensure safety of clinical blood transfusion. The ABO blood group system is one of the important blood group systems in clinical blood transfusion. ABO variant is the major factor for leading to inconsistency between ABO forward and reverse typing and the difficulty in interpreting the results of serological method for ABO phenotyping. With the development of molecular technology, the DNA method has been widely used to identify ABO variants. Currently, it was reported that more than 400 ABO alleles have been found from the ABO subgroup individuals around the world. At present, we described a novel mutation on the ABO*A1.02 allele, c.102C > A, which has been identified in a Chinese individual with an AW phenotype.
