Abstract. Determination of intrusion location in a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer is important and fundamental. In general, the spatial resolution of event location is limited by the temporal width of the probe pulse. We found that the location of a single intrusion event could be precisely determined with high spatial resolution regardless of the pulse width. First, the concept of “response section” was proposed and then it was proved that its left edge indicated the exact location of the intrusion event. Then, the spatial frequency energy distribution was used to achieve explicit edge determination. Three experiments were conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of locating the events compared with the traditional trace differential method.
