Crop Development With traditional plant breeding approaches, it can take a decade or more to develop a new crop. In a Perspective, Scheben and Edwards highlight recent efforts to use the gene editing technology CRISPR-Cas9 for faster plant breeding. This technology can yield an improved experimental crop in just one generation, but the genetic sequence and function of the target gene must be known. Public acceptance and appropriate regulation by governments will be necessary for the technology to be adopted widely. Science , this issue p. [1122][1] [1]: /lookup/doi/10.1126/science.aal4680
