Basophils require the calcium sensor STIM2 to respond to the cytokine IL-3 (Yoshikawa et al., in 9 April 2019 issue). Basophils are a small population of innate immune cells, but their release of the cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) is important for mounting an efficient immune response against distinct parasites. Yoshikawa et al. (in the 9 April 2019 issue) showed that whereas STIM1 is essential for IL-4 release after stimulation of FcεRI, STIM2 mediates a delayed IL-3/IL-33–induced IL-4 release independent of STIM1.
