Answer: c. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a relatively common presentation of tuberculosis, affecting 15% of the 7 million people newly diagnosed with TB throughout the world each year. Therefore, it is likely that clinical microbiologists will encounter specimens sent for ETPB evaluation at some point during their career. EPTB can affect any part of the body, with the most common sites being lymph node, pleura, bone and/or joint, and urogenital tract. A variety of sample types are possible for diagnosis of UGTB, including excised tissue, fluid, urine, or semen.
