Abstract The possibility of reducing the rated power of filter capacitors, i.e., the ratio of the product of the effective values of the voltage and current of a capacitor to the power of the DC–DC converter load, is shown. A DC–DC converter of the step-down type with a power of 40 W was used for this experimental study. A mathematical model was developed and a study of the change in the rated power for the converter components depending on the duty cycle and the number of cells of the converter was performed. The calculated and experimental dependences of the rated powers of the input and output filter capacitors and the effective value of the input current on the duty cycle for various numbers of used DC–DC converter cells are presented. The correspondence of the calculated and experimental values with an error of at most 10% has been obtained.
