Eugene was born on August 1, 1930, in Orlová, a town in the Moravian-Silesian Region of Czechoslovakia2. He graduated from Polish primary school and then (in 1948) Polish gymnasium. He graduated with a BSc (1952) and MSc (1953) and received his PhD (1962) at the faculty of Natural Sciences of the Charles University in Prague. By the end of the 1960s, Eugene worked at the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology, University of South Bohemia, in České Budějovice, and in the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava.
