Abstract The buckling of a rod of titanium nickelide of a circular cross section, the material of which undergoes the direct martensitic transformation under compressive stresses, is experimentally studied. The experimental data are compared with the theoretical solutions to the problem, which are obtained in terms of various concepts and formulations. The experimental data are found to correspond to the solutions obtained a single-coupled formulation best of all.
