Abstract The kinetic of propagation of the transverse fatigue crack nucleated in the rail head at a depth of 4 mm from the roll surface and caused the fracture of the rail is studied. Fatigue macrolines are shown to be used to determine the transverse fatigue crack growth rate and time in the head of the rail in a one-track railway line, where the train motion direction is periodically changed at known times.
