Abstract The microstructure, the phase composition, and the mechanical properties of a commercial cast high-temperature ML19 magnesium alloy are studied and compared in the as-cast state and after the recommended heat treatment. In addition to the well-known phases, long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases are found to form in the alloy; these phases are characteristic of both the as-cast and heat-treated states of the alloy.
