Abstract Models describing the appearance of hydrodynamic domains in nematics as a result of their reorientation in magnetic field have been studied applying the linear stability analysis for the cases of unbounded medium and splay distortion. It has been shown for both models that the hydrodynamic instability, which is responsible for the appearance of domains, is a saddle instability. The integral curves constructed on the basis of the stability analysis illustrate the obtained results.
