Abstract The uniqueness of the NiAs structure type has been proven. Investigations of a representative sample of more than 300 crystal structures made it possible to determine the field of stability of the NiAs structure type in the Mooser–Pearson plot and showed that the mean atomic packing fraction for this structure type is in a wide range, which is related to the force of interactions between neighboring metal atoms in the column of octahedra.
