The behavior of an extraordinary wave in a layered uniaxial anisotropic medium is reviewed. The transformation matrix is found for a homogeneous layer and for a multilayer structure with an arbitrary number of layers in an analytical form in elementary functions. The concept of partial waves in a layered medium and their contribution coefficients for an extraordinary wave is introduced. It is shown that the reflection and transmission coefficients of an extraordinary wave for a plane-parallel plate are equal to the sum of the reflection and transmission coefficients of partial waves.
